French polishing is a traditional wood finishing technique that delivers a high-gloss, mirror-like finish or satin finish to wooden surfaces. This labour-intensive process, developed in the early 19th century, involves applying numerous thin layers of shellac using a pad lubricated with oil. The beauty of French polishing lies in its ability to enhance the natural grain of the wood, creating a depth and richness that is unparalleled by modern finishing methods. This technique is particularly favoured for fine furniture and musical instruments, where the clarity and smoothness of the finish are paramount.

The process of French polishing begins with preparing the wood surface, which involves meticulous sanding and cleaning to ensure a smooth, dust-free base. The application pad, traditionally made from a cotton or wool core wrapped in soft cotton cloth, is then soaked in shellac. The shellac is applied in small, circular motions, gradually building up layers. Each layer is allowed to dry before the next is applied, with fine sanding in between to ensure an even finish. The final steps involve "spiriting off," where the pad is dampened with alcohol to remove any excess oil and bring out the full luster of the shellac. The result is a beautifully polished surface that highlights the wood's natural beauty and offers a durable, yet delicate, finish.
